What Working With a Website Designer Is Actually Like
Most people are unsure of what to expect when hiring a website designer. It can feel somewhat mysterious or even intimidating. Are you supposed to show up with a full plan? Do you need to know exactly what you want? Is the designer going to build something behind the scenes and then just send you the final version?
The truth is, it’s a lot more collaborative than people think.
Most of my clients find me through referrals, which is always flattering. It means someone else had a great experience and wanted to share it with others. Whether that first contact comes through a call or a quick enquiry form, the next step is always the same: understand what’s actually needed. I never just throw out a generic proposal. I ask questions, dig a little deeper, and figure out what kind of website will really support your business, not just today, but as it grows.
Because websites aren’t one-size-fits-all, some clients are just starting and need something clean, simple, and straightforward. Others are further along and require more advanced features, such as integrations, booking forms, and dynamic content. My goal is to meet you where you’re at and build something that can evolve with you.
Once the project gets underway, the process is straightforward — yet still personal.
We start with strategy. What’s the purpose of the site? Who’s it speaking to? What do you want people to do when they land on it?
Then we gather your assets: logo files, imagery, and written content. If your logo is too old or you can’t find the right format, I can help refine it. If writing isn’t your thing, I collaborate with passionate, smart copywriters who can help shape your message. The same applies to photography; I have a network of talented photographers I can recommend, whether you need portraits, product shots, or something in between.
Unlike some designers, I don’t spend weeks on static mockups. I prefer to work directly in the platform, building section by section, so you can see it come to life and give feedback as we go. That way, we don’t waste time polishing a flat design that doesn’t feel right once it’s interactive. We design in the real space, collaboratively.
Once everything’s locked in, I go through my final checklist. I’m quite particular (you could say a bit obsessive), but that’s because I care about the small stuff, the bits that can trip people up if they’re ignored. I test things across devices, double-check links, review SEO settings, optimise images, and clean up any hidden mess. If a layout requires a bit of custom code to shine, I’ll do that too, but never (or rarely) in a way that makes it difficult to manage later.
Then we launch. That includes the DNS connection (which I manage if needed, because no one enjoys that part).
But I don’t just wave goodbye after the site goes live. Every client receives a one-hour personalised training session, where I guide them through how to update content, write blog posts, and maintain organisation. After that, you'll receive two months of free support. If you require ongoing assistance, you can opt for one of my support plans or simply reach out when needed, and I’ll bill you hourly. Totally up to you.
What do clients say most often?
They’re surprised by how many little decisions are involved in good web design, and how much smoother the process is when they don’t have to figure it all out alone.
Yes, a good website takes thought, care and clarity. But it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. And it shouldn’t feel like a mystery.
Working with a designer means you don’t just get a site that looks great, you get one that makes sense, works hard behind the scenes, and actually grows with your business.
